Every Hannibal Lecter Portrayal in Movies and TV, Ranked (2)

He's one of cinema's most alluring fictional serial killers. A central character in the thrilling and horrifying crime series by Thomas Harris, Hannibal Lecter is the iconic cannibal psychiatrist who takes pleasure in toying with FBI agents needing his help to dive into the minds of the most brutal serial killers. His far-reaching influence has served as inspiration for cinematic and literary psychological thrillers for over three decades. Adapting four books into five movies and two television series (one of which does not include Lecter), the portrayals of Hannibal Lecter are wide-ranging from victims of creative circ*mstance to unabashedly original.

This character feeds into the fascination with serial killers and the psychology of their mindset, with his daytime profession as a psychiatrist all the more reason to wonder why he does what he does. The set of stars tasked with bringing this character to the screen took their liberties with the source material while remaining faithful to the foundation of who he is. Whether you've read the books or not, every portrayal of Hannibal Lecter brings a unique version of the character to horror audiences, creating one terrifying boogeyman to leave you looking over your shoulder.

4 Gaspard Ulliel

'Hannibal Rising' (2007)

A look into the origin story of Hannibal Lecter, Hannibal Rising is the unfortunate result of overworking a character and removing the mysterious allure of pop culture's most terrifying villain. Following the box-office success of Red Dragon, Thomas Harris was convinced to write the prequel book after the producer and owner of the Lecter naming rights, Martha de Laurentiis, told Harris a movie was being made whether there was a book or not. Harris wrote the novel and the screenplay, but the feature predictably flopped. The prequel features late French film star Gaspard Ulliel (tragically killed in a 2022 skiing accident) as the young Lecter seeking revenge following the death of his sister Mischa (Helena-Lia Tachovská), a character whose only mention is in the original books and not the films.

The issue with this portrayal of Lecter is that he becomes a hero of his own story through his determination to avenge Mischa's death. This character is anything but a hero—a psychologically seductive villain? Yes. Anti-hero, sometimes. Full-blown justified hero? No. Ulliel's performance is rooted in a premise that was written in haste instead of inspiration, unable to do the iconic character justice. While he is the best part of the film, Ulliel ultimately fails to create a foundation for where Lecter's cultured charisma comes from; instead, the film opts for sad*stic gore instead of curated violence. Lecter's basic principle is his alluring exterior that sets off subtle warning bells before he strikes. All of these elements are fundamentally missing in Hannibal Rising making the character and performance a victim of poor writing.

3 Brian Cox

'Manhunter' (1986)

This adaptation walked so future versions could run, including the portrayal of Hannibal. Brian Cox in Michael Mann'sManhunter produced the first cinematic adaptation of the acclaimed book character; however, the spelling is different with Cox's character being Dr. Lecktor due to licensing issues. Depicting the events from the first Harris book, Red Dragon, Manhunter co-stars William Petersen as Will Graham, the FBI agent responsible for putting Lecktor behind bars. Because the one-off film didn't bloom into a full-blood franchise, Cox's performance is often forgotten about when discussing the iconic character. His cold, inescapable portrayal, claustrophobic even, is instrumentally foundation for those he passed the torch to. What sets Cox apart is that his Lecktor is unlikable and, more importantly, rude, a character trait later versions capitalized on as reasoning for eating certain victims. His interactions with Will are less like seductive therapy sessions and more like conversations with an in-law you'd much rather get over with.

This depiction of Lecktor remains faithful to the serial killer psychiatrist's cunning nature; take for example the phone call scene where Lecktor obtains Will's home address without barely shifting his tone. The limited parameters of Lecktor's white cell provided an unforgiving guideline that Cox's performance and movements would be the central focus, leaving no room to drop the ball. And he didn't. His performance may not be idolized like the Oscar-winning one that would succeed Manhunter or the cult following gained from the most recent TV adaptation, but Cox set the tone for where the character had been and where it could go in his humanistic approach to a sad*stic serial killer.

2 Anthony Hopkins

'The Silence of the Lambs' (1991), 'Hannibal' (2001), 'Red Dragon' (2002)

In the most definitive and most iconic portrayal of Hannibal Lecter, Anthony Hopkins starred in all three original film versions depicting Harris's literary monster. His Oscar-winning portrayal in The Silence of the Lambs had limited screen time, but it was more than enough to terrify audiences. From his piercing blue eyes, the infamous hissing sound, and brilliantly delivered one-liners, Hopkins as Lecter is a cinematic relic. Following the success of the Academy Award-sweeping adaptation, Hopkins returned for Hannibal and Red Dragon, continuing to taunt FBI agents Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore) and Will Graham (Edward Norton). Inspired by Hal from 2001: A Space Odyssey, Hopkins' portrayal is a reserved, calculated interpretation of the character, one that lets the audiences imagine the horrifying acts Lecter is capable of. His chilling gaze mesmerizes and terrifies, inviting audiences into their own therapy session with the psychiatrist and lowering their guard just long enough to jump-scare them with a sudden, intentional movement to shatter the illusion. It's just fantastic acting through and through.

While he wasn't the first and wouldn't be the last actor to bring Lecter to screen, Hopkins solidified the cannibal in pop culture and cinema history. And to think he wasn't the studio's first choice. A seamless performance in every film, the continuity of Hopkins as Lecter holds the franchise together with a different FBI scene partner in each. Departing from the controversial book ending in Hannibal, the creative choices by director Ridley Scott, Hopkins, and Moore felt more authentic to the version of Lecter Hopkins created. Decades later, his presence as Hannibal Lecter remains looming for any filmmaker or actor attempting to revitalize the movie monster.

1 Mads Mikkelsen

NBC's 'Hannibal' (2013-2015)

While audiences never got to see this version of Lecter meet his Clarice Starling (some are still holding out hope), Mads Mikkelsen is the full package. Honoring the performances that came before him, Mikkelsen, alongside creator Bryan Fuller, cultivated new territory for the iconic character in Hannibal. The short-lived NBC series depicted Lecter before he was caught and the inception of his relationship with the FBI and agent Will Graham (Hugh Dancy). With only three seasons, the final season adapted and took creative liberties with the events of Red Dragon and Hannibal. The series and its portrayal of the relationship between Lecter and Graham is groundbreaking in its invitation of a will-they-won't-they queer romance. However, the biggest feat, and one he accomplished, was how to create an original depiction of a sacred character decades after Lecter first graced the screen.

It was a fight to cast Mikkelsen, but in a performance that deserves much more acclaim than it received, he created a captivating killer that audiences actually rooted for. During his most dire moments, Lecter shifted from villain to anti-hero, a feat that only a masterful performance could pull off. Mikkelsen brings a well-rounded version of the character with killer charisma, culinary craft, and an unflinching ability to perpetrate violence. Through the medium, he paints a believable origin story of Lecter's psychiatry practice, years of duping the FBI, his captivity, and eventual escape. Here, Lecter is a stylish, distinguished, and cultured man whose actions are those of a fallen angel rather than a crazed psychopath. Excitement and chills ran down the spines of every viewer the moment the iconic Hannibal theme, Bach's Aria Da Capo, began playing as he cut into a meal obviously not of the vegetarian kind, face subtly emerging from the shadows—this is the best portrayal of Hannibal Lecter. Make no mistake, Mikkelsen's Lecter is a monster, but one that audiences actually wouldn't mind a dinner invitation from.
